The People who built the program
Arusha
Arusha was our first site. From 2017 to 2020 we trained 24 Acute Care Core Instructors and One Master Instructor. Many have since moved on, but because of our standardized approach to image acquisition and instruction, they have been able to continue to instruct courses in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam with the teams there.
Wendy Willmore
Master Instructor Course Director
Wendy is a missionary surgeon, a passionate educator and coordinator of the Pan African Academy of Christian Surgeons’ (PAACS) Surgical Residency Program in Arusha, before moving on to Nkinga to do the same there. She now organizes the EDE introductory POCUS courses for the 40 incoming surgical residents at the annual PAACS conference in Limuru.
Yamikani Limbe
Surgeon , Nkhoma, Malawi AC Core Instructor
Following his residency in Arusha, Limbe returned to his native Malawi where he is a Consultant General Surgeon at Nkhoma. He continues to team teach with us at the PAACS conference in Nairobi introducing the new residents to POCUS.
Lemanuel Lema
General Surgeon, ALMC Arusha, AC Core Instructor
Lemanuel was one of the early participants in the Arusha training program when he was a surgical resident at Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre (ALMC). Now as a consultant in general surgery he continues to use and teach POCUS at the bedside.
Erick Mulla
Surgeon AC Core Instructor
Erick was born in Arusha where he now works as a Consultant General Surgeon. He earned his IP certification during his residency, when it was integrated into the program there and has continued to pay-it-forward in instruction with the team.
Elirehema Kimaro
Surgeon Arusha AC Core Instructor
Elirehema became certified as an independent practitioner in 2019 and then apprenticed as an instructor. He is a Consultant Surgeon at Selian Hospital in Arusha where he teaches at the bedside and also joins the team in Nairobi for the PAACS conference introductory courses.

Benson is a consultant General Surgeon at ALMC hospital in Arusha
Collin Frank
AC Core Instructor
Collins certified as IP and apprenticed as instructor in 2019. He was able to use his pocus skills while working as a flight doctor with the Flying Medical Service in Arusha and then with the Italian NGO CUAMM. He came to Nairobi as part of the team to instruct at the first Bootcamp there.
Maneno Mwangalaba
Internal Medicine AC Core Instructor
Maneno used ultrasound for vascular access, learned from visiting faculty, long before he became entranced by all the other applications and became a valuable team addition. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Mbarara University, Uganda.
Peter Mabula
Emergency Medicine
Peter worked in ALMC Hospital in Arusha before going to Dar es Salaam for his Emergency Medicine Residency. By the time he returned to Arusha CPoCUS training had arrived and he quickly joined the team. He spread the word to his colleagues at Muhimbili University which sparked the expansion to that site.
The Next Step
Nairobi
Training began in Nairobi in 2019. The team there is drawn from multiple medical disciplines. By 2024 we had 25 instructors for Basic Applications, with 5 Master Instructors, 6 Track Instructors for Resuscitation, and 2 for 3OB track. Their long term goal is to become a centre of excellence for standardized POCUS training and they are well on their way to achieving it!
Anne Mugera

Anne is a Critical Care Physician and Head of Medical ICU at Kenyatta National Hospital A founder member of the Nairobi POCUS interest group, she works tirelessly to ensure smooth running of our courses and can find a half a dozen beds on an hours notice.
Jacqueline Wanjiku Kagima

Course Director
Jaci is a Pulmonary and Critical Care Specialist at Kenyatta National Hospital. Her interest sparked when she was exposed to our introductory EDE course at AMREF Flying Doctors, so she certified as AC CORE IP in Arusha, and then became our local champion in Nairobi where she spearheaded the development of our site there.
Sheila Ayesha

Course Coordinator
Sheila is a RN and began as a coordinator for us in 2019. Not only is she an expert at wrangling models but she went on to train as an instructor for basic applications and is also certified as Resuscitation IP. She has shared her skills working with GUSI projects in Kenya.
Grace Wanjiku

Resuscitation IP
Grace is an Assistant Professor in Emergency Medicine in the Global Health Division of Brown University, USA. She works clinically at Kenyatta National Hospital and Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi and her interests are the development of Emergency Medicine in Kenya and use of POCUS in RLS.

Andrew is a consultant physician in Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care at Kenyatta National Hospital. He has been with the team since 2019 and brings a valuable contextual perspective on the value of lung POCUS in resource limited settings.
Ismael Ahmed

3OB Apprentice Instructor
Ismael Ahmed is a Consultant Pediatrician at The Nairobi Hospital. He is an original member of the Nairobi POCUS interest group and a real ultrasound junkie and even trained in 3OB so he can look at babies before birth.
Ikol Allan

Third Trimester OBS Instructor
Ikol is a consultant Obstetrician/Gynaecologist at Kenyatta National Hospital. Following certification in basic AC Core applications in 2019 he traveled to Arusha, Tanzania to train in our first Third Trimester (3OB) course so that we could bring that course also to Nairobi.

Pediatrician
Diana certified in AC Core at our COVID compliant course in 2021 and became an instructor. She then certified in the ACCORE Plus modules and began instructing the expanded course in 2023.

Charles Njoroge
Third Trimester OB Instructor
Charles became interested in POCUS while in his OB/GYN residency and traveled to Dar es Salaam to attend our course there. He was then able to coordinate the first 3OB course in Nairobi and to apprentice as an instructor there. He is especially appreciated for following up with the positive findings we inevitably discover in our third trimester models.

Dar es Salaam
Expansion of the program was planned for 2020 but had to be deferred until 2022. By 2024 we had trained 22 Independent Practitioners with 11 AC Core Instructors and 5 Master Instructors. Dar es Salaam is the site where we first introduced our AC Core Plus course as the standard course for resource limited settings. Dar has now become the leading 3OB teaching site with 16 independent practitioners and 4 instructors.

Kay came to the Nairobi 2019 course to become an AC Core IP and Instructor, returning to Dar es Salaam as one of our Local Champions to develop a program at Aga Khan Hospital there. She coordinated courses from 2022 to 2024.

Irene is an Emergency Physician at Muhimbili National University Hospital. She trained with us in Arusha before returning home as one of our Local Champions to develop the site program.
Ummehani Dossaje

Umi certified as an IP in Arusha and taught with us there. She credits the program with influencing her career choice of radiology. Now based in Dar es Salaam she is a master instructor and brings valuable insights from her radiology experience.
Janet Sugut

Janet certified as AC Core IP in Nairobi and was perfectly placed to help in Dar es Salaam when she became an EM resident. She found her credentials helpful when participating in POCUS research projects. Now back in Nairobi as an emergency physician, she will rejoin the team there.

Muz is the Program Director for Ob/GYN Residency at AKU Dar and our Local Champion for 3OB POCUS. She would like to develop capacity to teach in outlying areas and is using our Butterfly iQ system on loan to the department to mentor residents in longitudinal training.

Vicky spent her internship in Arusha where she certified as AC Core IP before she moved to Dar es Salaam to start an OB/GYN residency. Now an instructor in both AC Core Plus applications and 3OB, she has taught in all three of our sites.

Farida first took an introductory EDE course in Arusha, certified as AC Core IP in Dar es Salaam while training in Emergency Medicine and although again based in Arusha, takes part in all our training camps in Dar es Salaam.

Samuel Agot
Physician, Bor, South Sudan
AC Core Plus Instructor
Samuel was displaced by war to Cuba where he went to medical school before moving to Canada for additional training and then returning to his home in South Sudan. Following his IP training in Dar es Salaam, he returned to Bor as an instructor and Local Champion with a Butterfly iQ system. Our plan was to follow up with training in Bor. This has been deferred due to war in neighbouring Sudan but remains a goal.
